Understanding Scrambling Grades: Grade 1, 2 and 3 Explained

Oct 31, 2026

Understanding the different scrambling grades is an important part of choosing an appropriate level of challenge for a day in the mountains.

In this taster lesson from the Scrambling Course, we look at the three main scrambling grades (Grade 1, 2 and 3), exploring what each involves and how the difficulty, exposure and technical demands increase as you move up the grades.

Scrambling grades are a useful guide to the general difficulty of a route, helping you make more informed decisions about which scrambles are appropriate for your experience and confidence.

In this lesson, we break down each grade, looking at:

➡️ Grade 1: Exposed scrambling with straightforward movement.

➡️ Grade 2: Steeper, more sustained scrambling where some sections may require climbing skills and the use of a rope.

➡️ Grade 3: More technical scrambling, often involving short pitches of rock climbing and the use of rope techniques to safeguard trickier sections.

We also look at how plus and minus grades can help you understand the difficulty within each grade, how conditions can affect the overall challenge, and why it's important to read route descriptions rather than relying on the grade alone.

With clear explanations and practical examples from some of the UK's classic scrambling routes, this lesson will help you develop a better understanding of scrambling grades and make more informed decisions when planning your days in the mountains.

If you're looking to build your scrambling knowledge and develop your confidence on more adventurous mountain terrain, the Scrambling Course is a great place to start.
