Filming Winter Mountain Navigation in the Cairngorms
Jun 03, 2026Behind the Scenes: Filming Winter Mountain Navigation in the Cairngorms
There’s a reason the Cairngorms have such a reputation among mountain professionals. When it comes to winter navigation, few places can match the combination of vast terrain, rapidly changing weather, challenging conditions, and genuine mountain seriousness. So when we headed north to film our Winter Mountain Navigation Course with Lou, we knew Scotland would provide the perfect classroom.

What we didn’t know was quite how much variety we’d experience in just a few days.
The Cairngorms delivered everything from stunning bluebird conditions to complete whiteouts. One day we were filming across sparkling snow-covered plateaus under clear skies, with distant mountain views stretching for miles. The next, visibility had disappeared entirely, leaving us immersed in a world of white where the horizon vanished and the landscape blended seamlessly into the cloud.
For a navigation course, it couldn’t have been better.

One of the biggest challenges people face when moving into winter mountain environments is understanding how dramatically snow and weather can transform familiar terrain. Features that would normally make navigation straightforward can disappear completely beneath snow drifts. Paths vanish. Landforms become harder to interpret. Distances become difficult to judge. Even standing still in a whiteout can leave you feeling disoriented.
During filming, we encountered a huge variety of snow conditions, from deep drifts and wind-scoured ridges to broad open plateaus where visibility dropped to almost nothing. It allowed us to capture not only the techniques needed to navigate safely, but also the environments where those skills become essential.
Of course, filming in those conditions brought its own challenges.
Operating cameras with cold hands and thick gloves is never easy. Every piece of equipment had to be carried up into the mountains alongside our winter gear. Strong winds tested both our stamina and our patience, while batteries drained faster than usual in the cold temperatures.

The drone added another layer of complexity. While aerial footage can beautifully showcase the scale of the Cairngorm landscape, launching and landing in strong winds requires careful judgement and planning. There were several occasions where conditions demanded extra caution, particularly when recovering the drone safely.
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of all was trying to capture the feeling of a true whiteout. Anyone who has experienced one knows how disorientating it can be. On camera, however, a white screen doesn’t always convey the challenge of navigating when every direction looks the same. We spent a lot of time working through ways to demonstrate the techniques Lou teaches and show why precise navigation becomes so important when visibility disappears.
What stood out throughout the trip was just how valuable the Cairngorms are as a training ground. The combination of terrain, weather and scale creates an environment where navigation skills are genuinely tested. It’s a place where small errors can quickly become significant, making good planning, accurate compass work and strong decision-making absolutely essential.
The result is a course that doesn’t just teach navigation techniques in theory. It demonstrates how those skills are applied in real winter mountain conditions, from clear days where you can build confidence in the terrain, to challenging whiteout scenarios where navigation becomes the key to safe travel.

By the end of the filming trip, we’d experienced pretty much everything a Scottish winter mountain environment could throw at us. Snow, wind, sunshine, cloud, whiteouts, and some truly spectacular mountain days.
And perhaps that’s why Scotland remains one of the best places in the world to learn winter navigation.
If you can navigate confidently in a Scottish winter whiteout, you can probably navigate anywhere.
We’re excited to share the finished course and bring these mountain lessons to life for anyone looking to develop the skills and confidence needed to travel safely in winter conditions.
